For me this is a make or break season for Anderson, he will either really kick on or just go through the motions. I know he nicked a few goals last season but fancy tricks on the halfway line just aint gonna cut the mustard now. He needs to get a lot more productive in the last third for a 40 odd mil player.

We better sign a DM, pronto.

I thought the days of watching Noble mis time tackles and giving away free kicks on the edge of our box were bebind us!

Lanzini is our most creative player currently follwed by Fornals who may still be off the pace for City,a great player to have off the bench in this game.
Anderson hasn't done much of note in pre-season and looke out of sorts yesterday where Yarmelenko has shown and wants the ball more. Just my opionion .
Antonio will be a distraction for city and will need his pace when we need to break quickly.

I'm fully prepared to admit I'm wrong about him, when he proves I am.

Much prefer to see Mark Noble there, even if I have often argued that he plays better further up the pitch.

gph,

If it wasn't for the fact that he's allegedly, a defensive midfielder, I would completely agree.

But, we're not exactly overflowing with DM's, are we?

Sanchez doesn't fuck up everything he does.

I don't think that should be the standard for getting in the team. Or even the squad.

As the season progresses, i can see the argument for having Yarmolenko over Anderson for certain games.

At the moment, Anderson seems to be putting himself about more and Yarmolenko is still not quite fully fit, although he's showing glimpses of what's to come.

I like the fact that we have Antonio, Snodgrass, & Yarmolenko players who can start or come on and add a bit of grit and determination, but not lose too much of our ability to attack well.

Dare i say it, I actually saw Sanchez make a couple of tackles and he managed to keep possession well enough, yesterday. I wouldn't want to start him, but if he keeps improving fitness wise, he could be an option to come off the bench and help see a game out.

Like when we're 2 - 0 up against Man City, next week.

Going by how much Anderson continued to play after quiet games last year and how we have consistently lined-up in preseason, my money would be on the manager starting him a lot.

What have people seen in him, worthy of dropping, incidentally?

Re: West Ham United Vs Athletic Club
Fornals has been v good in pre-season. I defo wouldn't start with Antonio over him.

And Fredericks wasn't great yesterday but Johnson was partly culpable for every goal against Hertha Berlin and is still just a kid. No way I'd start him now though I'm sure he'll develop into a solid player.

I'd start with Yamalenko over Anderson as well. Not because of this friendly.

You'd not start the season with our most creative player and highest scorer from last season because of how he played in a meaningless pre season friendly?

Re: West Ham United Vs Athletic Club
Thought we were poor actually.
Took us 20 minutes to get going and only a good 5 minute spell brought us back into the game.
Poor crossing by Cresswell and Fredericks meant Haller didn’t have a decent effort until his overhead attempt in the 2nd half.
Fornals went missing by and large. Lanzini tried to create but Anderson was way below average.
Both Yarmelenko and Diangana created some good opportunities in the 2nd half. Yarmelenko especially looks lively and I would start him ahead of Anderson. Antonio proved to be a handful too and I would have him ahead of Fornals.
Rice had a good game and wanted to keep the ball moving. Wilshere seemed laboured at times, presume he was conserving himself for next week.
Masuaku offered more than Cresswell, looking sound and creative.
Roberto is not PL standard.
I hope Fabianski is fit for next Saturday.
Fabianski
Johnson
Diop
Balbuna
Masuaku
Yarmelenko
Wilshere
Lanzini
RIce
Antonio
Haller

Re: West Ham United Vs Athletic Club
I don’t think that the personnel in central midfield is the problem. When we are out of possession we leave two upfront (often the two new lads today) which is extremely unusual for a team of our status in our league. Further to this, two of our, out of possession midfield four are Lanzini and Anderson and one of these will often stay high and wide.

You can contrast this with other sides asking their forward, let alone attacking midfielder, to drop into the out of possession midfield block. These sides will also have far more defensively minded wide players.

We are essentially defending with six when others defend with ten or eleven.

It’s the boss’s choice and what we all wished for when Sam was in charge. I personally like it but just wish we would be a little more direct on the counter attack to fully exploit the numerical advantage on transition.

Buy a top class DM put Rice at CB next to Diop - job done.

Weird and stupid deflected own goals aside, I saw enough in the first half to know we can be a force this season if everyone stays fit.

Wilshere, Anderson, lanzini, fornels and haller could provide us with some great football.
